General dentistry: check-ups, cleaning and fillings

Dental fillings

A filling repairs a tooth that has a cavity, a small chip or a worn edge. The decayed or weak part is removed and the space is rebuilt so the tooth is sealed, comfortable and strong enough to chew on again. Most fillings are done in a single visit of 20 to 45 minutes.

VisitsUsually 1 visit of 20–45 minutes per tooth

Step by step

  1. 1
    Examine and X-ray

The dentist checks the tooth and takes an X-ray if needed to see how deep the cavity goes.

  2. 2
    Numb the tooth

Local anaesthetic is used for most fillings, so the tooth does not hurt during treatment.

  3. 3
    Remove the decay

The soft, decayed part is removed and the cavity is shaped and cleaned.

  4. 4
    Fill and shape

Tooth-coloured composite is placed in thin layers, each hardened with a blue light, then shaped to fit your bite.

  5. 5
    Check the bite and polish

You bite on a thin paper so any high spot can be adjusted, and the filling is polished smooth.

Who it is for
  • A cavity found at a check-up or on an X-ray
  • A small chip or rough edge on a tooth
  • An old filling that is cracked, leaking or has decay under it
  • Sensitivity to sweet or cold that comes from a cavity
Recovery

You can eat once the numbness wears off, usually within 2 to 3 hours; take care not to bite your cheek or lip before then. Mild sensitivity to cold for a few days is common. If the tooth feels high when you bite, or sensitivity gets worse instead of better, the bite may need a small adjustment.

Risks

Fillings are a routine, low-risk treatment. A deep cavity can leave the nerve irritated, and occasionally a tooth later needs root canal treatment. Fillings wear and can chip or leak over time; many last 5 to 10 years or more, depending on size, position and grinding. When a large part of the tooth is missing, an onlay or crown may protect it better than a big filling.

What affects the cost

We don't publish prices online. After an examination you get a written estimate that lists each item.

Size and depthA small cavity on one surface is quicker to repair than a large one covering several surfaces.
MaterialTooth-coloured composite is used for most fillings; other materials may be advised for some back teeth.
Number of teethSeveral fillings can sometimes be done in one visit.
X-raysAn X-ray may be needed to check the depth of the cavity or decay between teeth.

Questions patients ask

Does getting a filling hurt?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so most people feel pressure and vibration but not pain. Very small fillings sometimes need no injection.

How long does a filling last?

Many fillings last 5 to 10 years or more. Brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular check-ups help them last longer.

Will the filling match my tooth?

Composite fillings are tooth-coloured and are chosen to match the shade of your tooth.

Can I eat after a filling?

Yes, once the numbness has gone. Composite is fully hardened by the light before you leave.

Why does my tooth feel sensitive after a filling?

Some sensitivity to cold for a few days is normal. If it lasts more than a couple of weeks or you have a throbbing pain, see the dentist.
